Hot Cocoa with a Twist

I have fond memories of coming in from sledding the day away, shivering and numb and being convinced that I would never be warm again. But my mom or dad knew just the trick! They would warm up some milk and add their favorite Swiss Miss cocoa packets with those little crunchy marshmallows, sit my brother and myself on the sofa in front of some cartoons, and let us enjoy the day inside.

Here are some cups of nostalgia… with a twist.


Red Wine Hot Chocolate from

Makes 2 mugs full, but this drink is rich so the website suggests serving smaller portions
1 1/2 cup milk (I used 2%)
1 cup red wine (I used Kendall-Jackson Cabernet Sauvignon)
1/3 cup dark chocolate chunks
Optional: coconut whipped cream
In a saucepan over medium heat, combine milk and chocolate chips. Whisking constantly until chocolate is melted into milk and you have a thick and creamy chocolate milk. Pour in red wine and heat until everything is hot. Pour into 2 mugs or 6-8 smaller glasses and top with coconut whipped cream



Spicy Hot Chocolate from
Serves 3
2 1/2 cups milk
1/2 cup semi sweet chocolate chips
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon chili powder
pinch of nutmeg
sugar, optional (depends on your taste)
Add all ingredients to a medium saucepan. Heat over medium heat until chocolate is melted and almost simmering, stirring frequently. Taste and add sugar, if needed.



Mint White Hot Chocolate from
Serves 4
2 cups milk
2 cups half & half cream
8 oz. white chocolate, chopped
1 tsp. peppermint extract
a few drops of green food coloring
marshmallows (optional)
In a heavy- bottomed pot, heat the milk and cream over medium heat for 5 minutes. Stir in the white chocolate, remove from heat and set aside for a few minutes. Add the peppermint extract and food coloring and whisk until smooth.
