A gluten-free friend and I were looking to have lunch somewhere she hadn’t yet been to. I myself have been focused on a mainly vegetarian diet, so our options were slim pickings with both of our dietary restrictions.
Thankfully Our House Cafe (owned by Sarah and Harvey Weinstein) exists, where they have the ability to satisfy gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan diets. We decided to go there.
We ordered a modified Reuben sandwich on gluten-free bread, vegan African peanut stew, potato-egg salad, and a variety of their delicious pickles from Lancaster Pickle Company.
The gluten-free bread was absolutely delicious. Although it was smaller than their normal sandwich size, we asked Chef Jennifer Thompson to make it open-face-style for us so it would be easier to share.
Our House Cafe’s vegan African peanut stew was featured in FLL magazine’s Issue 36 Food Fight. I was so excited to order it again. There are several layers of flavors within the stew as it takes several hours to prepare and make.
The potato-egg salad was to die for. It was creamy, flavorful, and almost sweet. It really hit the spot. The variety of pickles from Lancaster Pickle Company varied in flavor, from dill to sweet to spicy horseradish.
Needless to say, it was the perfect lunch for two fairly difficult individuals. ?
